Saint George Day in Sfântu Gheorghe

“An old fishing settlement, Sfântu Gheorghe (Saint George) is attested in historical documents from the 14th century, when the development of the economy increased the role of Italian (Genoese) merchants, especially around the Sfântu Gheorghe arm. At that time, the Genoese held a real monopoly in the waters of the Black Sea, trading with the fish caught at the mouths of the Danube. For this reason, the town of San-Giorgio also appears on the map of the Genoese Visconti, from 1318.” (according to Wikipedia)
