“An old fishing settlement, Sfântu Gheorghe (Saint George) is attested in historical documents from the 14th century, when the development of the economy increased the role of Italian (Genoese) merchants, especially around the Sfântu Gheorghe arm. At that time, the Genoese held a real monopoly in the waters of the Black Sea, trading with the fish caught at the mouths of the Danube.
