“From a social point of view it’s quite sad here.”

Florin Tomazatos, marine pilot, Sulina, Danube Delta

I would talk first of all the problem of the people here who don’t really have any means of livelihood. From a social point of view it’s quite sad here. It’s beautiful, because we have sunrises, because we fish, and things like that. Yes, it’s not only that, because we have the sea, the Danube and the beach and all these beauties. They are beautiful, but the season is short. And people are worried about tomorrow. The season lasts 3 months maximum and the alternatives are very, very limited here. A few sailors, a few who work in tourism, restaurants, guesthouses, mini-hotels, fishermen and that’s about it. Fishermen, who can catch which fish anymore? The pressure is great on the water, on the fish.
I think my greatest wish would be to have children close by. But, I’m afraid that no goldfish can do this. Because everyone knows: our children have been chased out of the country. They don’t really have any conditions for affirmation, they don’t really have, they don’t get paid. Sometimes you even think that they are not welcome. This area has been depopulated a lot. I told you, there are no jobs in the first place. Of course… so we are doubly oppressed: by the country and by this place. The children have no…, they don’t really have a future here from a professional point of view.
Tourism. A kind of tourism done properly would be good. I mean, inviting people to decent walks, not with hundreds of horsepower, to recreational fishing. That’s about it. I say that fishing and the fact that we have this wonderful beach are two assets that no one can take away from us and they need to be capitalized on much better.
