On fishing

Gelu Cărbunescu, fisherman, Mila 23, Danube Delta

Before, a fisherman would catch, the most inexperienced fisherman, who had the fewest tools, would still catch somewhere around 60-70 kilos of fish. The worst fisherman. And a good fisherman, per day, would catch somewhere between 150-200 kilos of fish per day. Nowadays a fisherman, no matter how good he is, catches 20-30 kilos every two days.
There is a big difference between how it was before and where it has gotten to today. Good thing the cause is also big, here it is also a matter of the clogging of ponds, of canals. During Ceaușescu’s time, the canals were all nicely unclogged . Now they don’t even deal with unclogging like the world, nothing, everything is a mess.
And excessive fishing… Why is there excessive fishing? The fisherman tries to catch as many fish as possible and then he makes as many tools as possible and he catches about, let’s say at least 100-200 kilos of fish per day so that he can have some of that money left over. He spends on gas, expenses, bills and I don’t know what else, and what’s left over for taxes and the house. Now if you catch 20-30 kilos every two days, well what have you done? You have done nothing.
