Tincuța Ciobanu, local, Letea, Danube Delta
It’s a very bad situation with the fish. Because there are so many engines. Before there were no engines, it was by oars. And there was fish… I used to take some crayfish to the fishmonger 5-6 times a day, huge carps, 10-15 kilos apiece. But now with so many engines, the water has gone down and the fish have run away to where it is quiet. There are rarely fish. When the water is a little bit higher, it comes from the Danube, it comes from there, it comes from there. But so bad, very, very bad with the fish. I was there and I know what fishing means, I was there for 6 years, day after day. Day after day, 6 years. I slept in huts, I slept on flooded islets, I slept… but where did my husband and I not sleep? Alas, on our own, how did we sleep. And that’s it. We were always running after money, running after money and look, the money was gone. But we got sick, our legs hurt, our bones hurt…
