“Here, we survive!”

“Here, we survive!”

Father Atanasie Hotovi, monk, Letea, Danube Delta

Here in the Delta, those who do tourism have a kind of vision, they see the world in their own way, but we who live here see it completely differently. That’s why we say here: we survive. We have adapted, we have made friends with nature, we have united with nature, because you have to unite with nature. When I say nature, I mean first of all water, because everything is water. And what does water mean? I have also seen the locals here, they are very, very attracted to water. We are very attracted to water and I, who am from Cluj, have also come to be attracted to water. If I am around water, I feel so good. I feel one with the waters. And I see tourists coming, getting into boats, and trembling with fear because they feel that the water is dangerous, it is deep and they feel fear. We don’t, we don’t feel that. We feel joy. We don’t ask ourselves whether the water is deep or wide. For us it’s a pleasure and especially for me it’s a special pleasure to be able to go by boat. If I go by boat I relax, I let go, I lose all these worldly worries. There are two things we all learned to control. Water and loneliness.
